frequently asked questions :
A phone system, or pbx, or ksu as a telephone system's central processing unit is often referred to, allows each telephone in the system to access outside telephone company lines to place an outgoing call, or to answer a call coming in on any of the outside telephone lines. Access to all of the lines is possible from even an ordinary single line phone. A phone system also produces a true internal intercom system allowing station to station private conversation between phones within the system. Outside calls can be put on hold, transferred between extensions, or directed to an answering device (answering machine or voice mail) if the desired party is busy or does not answer.

CAN I USE MY EXISTING TELEPHONES?
Yes, the IPS phone system, unlike most systems, is a hybrid. While multi-function, multi-button proprietary telephones can simplify functions such as call hold or call transfer, any ordinary single line phone can be used to access all features of the IPS. You don't have to have a multi-line phone. The telephone system will automatically route a single line phone to an available outside line, or to an incoming call on any line. This is a very important cost saving consideration in that proprietary phones are considerably more expensive than a typical single line phone.

DO I NEED SPECIAL WIRING?
Like most phone systems, the IPS requires "home run" type wiring. This means that each extension must have a direct, unshared run of wire back to the telephone system which would reside in a closet or electrical room. This home run wiring is different from most homes which typically utilize a single run of wire throughout the house that makes a stop at each phone outlet. This is why your call can be interrupted by someone else picking up another phone within the house. Home run wiring eliminates calls being interrupted, and allows intercom calling between extensions.

IS THE IPS EXPANDABLE IF MY BUSINESS GROWS?
The IPS308 can handle up to three outside phone lines, and eight extensions. The IPS416 can handle four lines and 16 extensions. If your needs exceed these limits, you will need another larger system, as the IPS systems are not expandable. Because of the IPS features such as automatic fax routing, and the ability to connect computer modems to the extensions, you may no longer need "dedicated" lines that are used only for a fax machine or for a modem. This flexibility is another cost saving opportunity which can free up dedicated lines for voice communication as well thereby requiring fewer outside lines which can run $60 to $70 each for business service.

CAN THE IPS TRANSFER MY CALLS TO ME AT AN OFFSITE LOCATION OR MY CELL PHONE?
No, the IPS does not have the ability to route incoming calls back out on a second line to another phone number. You can still utilize your phone company's call forwarding services, or leave a message as to where you can be reached.

CAN I INSTALL THE SYSTEM MYSELF?
Yes. The IPS is designed to be a do-it-yourself system. Every step of the process has a manual that clearly and completely provides details for a successful installation. Perhaps the most unique feature of the IPS is its configuration software which enables pc programming with helpful, step by step instructions
